ADVANCED
TENNIS COACH
Daphne
has been the resident Tennis Coach at Wahminda
Park for more
than 20 years. During this time she has trained through the Tennis Professionals
Qld., attending seminars and conferences, and is a Tennis Australia Certified
Advanced Coach.
Children
from 6 years of age, Beginners, Players, Teenagers and Adults are all being
taught to play and enjoy the game of tennis. Down Syndrome, ADDHD, Autistic and
other special needs children also learn with Daphne. The name of the game is to
have fun and learn.
Daphne
is excited to now be training wheelchair athletes. The only difference in their
game is that they are allowed to let the ball bounce twice before returning the
shot. All other rules are the same, so they have to work quite hard to push
their chair around the court, at the same time hitting the ball. The Council has
been asked to lay a concrete path across to the toilet area to assist these
athletes in easier access to the courts.
Tennis
Clinics are held throughout most holidays, and the FHPA together with Daphne run
a Tennis Tournament every June/July holidays. This is very popular as the
children use it as a training tournament preparing them for the Superleague
events. For the last couple of years this has been run in a Round Robin format,
which gives the children more tennis and more experience.
Past
pupils play a Special Sunday Tournament with singles all morning, and after a
B.B.Q lunch, draw partners for a Mixed Doubles afternoon. Even though they play
from 8
am to
6
pm and try
to win the Stewarts Shield, it is a very social day where they catch up
with friends.
